The Idea Behind
Founded in 2012, Sabaq Foundation (http://sabaq.pk/) is a non-profit Trust registered with Government of Pakistan. The Trust was founded by Iqbal Mustafa Khan in 2012, after he realized that there was a severe shortage of quality education in Pakistan. Iqbal thoroughly analyzed Pakistan’s education system and found that the government sector was not doing enough for the betterment of education in Pakistan.
The Cancer of after-school Tuition
The problem is even graver in the rural areas of Pakistan. Our country’s far flung rural areas are completely deprived off from infrastructural facilities, good quality schools and qualified faculty. And then there is the cancer of after-school tuition which has plagued our society. The parents are sick of it since its cutting the strings off their purse. The children also hate it since it leaves them with no time for extra-curricular activities. However, the poor teaching standards in schools leave them with no choice. This is a clear indication of a failing Pakistani education system breeding in a whole new “after-school tuition industry”. This industry is cunningly exploiting the students by filling in the gap created by our educational institutes.
All of this served as an inspiration behind the initiative of Sabaq Foundation. The main objective of our Trust is to create online videos for students to enable them to learn online. The students can simply log into our website: http://sabaq.pk/ to access the free online videos.
What sabaq.pk Offers:
Our website contains more than 3500 video tutorials covering the complete Matric syllabus for Math, Physics & Chemistry for all Pakistani boards. Moreover, videos covering the syllabus of Cambridge University O Level Math are also on our website. Biology tutorials covering Matric syllabus are up next for uploading. All the videos have been prepared and sequenced following the exact syllabus of respective Boards.
Over 2 million video lectures have been delivered to 350,000 students. If the same number of students opt for after-school tuitions costing around Rs. 2,000 per month to each student (a conservative estimate), it would cost their parents Rs. 700 million (350,000* 2,000 =700 m) . All this cost can be saved if students watch our video tutorials. Our videos explain all the concepts thoroughly using state of the art softwares. It is therefore, that we claim our website to be a bank of world-class online video tutorials for Pakistani students.
All the video tutorials are in our national language Urdu as it will facilitate students from all over Pakistan to better understand our lectures. Our team comprises of highly qualified faculty members from renowned universities of Pakistan. All of them are highly dedicated and motivated to improve the prospects of education in Pakistan. To accomplish that, the faculty members are provided a one-month vigorous training on how to produce a good quality video all by themselves.
How the Videos are Made:
The whole process has a lot of intricacies. We have hired at least two faculty members for teaching every subject. The first step is the topic mapping for every subject. For that, the text-books of the respective boards are followed. This is then followed by a comprehensive research of every topic. Various text books including Matric/O Level as well as academic websites are consulted to prepare every topic. Then the lecture outline is prepared.
The videos comprise of two types: concept development and problem solution. Every video lecture needs to be conceptual, concise and yet content rich. Hence, our videos incorporate fully-labeled, animated and colorful diagrams where needed. The video making process goes through multiple levels of evaluation i.e. self-review, peer-review and then a final review and any video that does not come up to the standards is redone.
Sabaq Foundation eventually aims to become a household name for providing free video tutorials to grade 5 through 12. Our goal is to improve learning prospects for Pakistani students through world-class online videos.
Not only students, our videos also provide great value to the teachers. Many teachers seek help from our videos while preparing their lectures. Our conceptual videos incorporate colorful graphs and visual animations along with written text which makes learning full of fun. This is why teachers are also keen to incorporate them in their lectures to facilitate students with audio-visual tutorials. This has sparked a new life to the conventional school lectures delivered on boards.
This is how Sabaq is serving as a pioneer of blended learning in Pakistan. Our noble cause is facilitating the students, parents as well as the teachers gaining knowledge via e-learning, a concept spreading like a wild fire throughout the world. People from all over Pakistan can access our online video tutorials 24/7.
We believe that our non-profit initiative of e-learning can be a game changer in Pakistan. This, along with boosting our literacy rate can play a pivotal role in building Pakistan’s human resource, thereby boosting our economic growth and GDP.
